Forming Atomic Habits


James Clear's atomic habits system has helped many influencers to change their bad habits into productive habits. This system has proven to be efficient in helping ambitious and hardworking people to accomplish their goal. We learn why setting and accomplishing goals is not enough for us to manifest the life we want.


Problems With Focusing Mainly On Goals

-Setting a goal will allow you to achieve a momentary fit, but it not is a system that will ensure that you convert that achievement into habits.

-Setting a goal has a way of postponing happiness until the goal is achieved, however, building a system of habits can help you learn to love the process as much as the end product.

-Goals can stunt long-term progress because people tend to relax after they achieve goals, however a system ensures lifetime progress because it is not dependent on a goal. (For example, if you have a system, you will not stop running just because you won the race; you will continue even after that race because you have built a developing system of running.)


The Importance of Forming Good Habits

-Small consistent improvements have a massive impact in the long run.

-If you build good habits, you will accrue more good habits.

-Building good habits in the present, allows you to become more of what you want to be in the future.

-Just as atoms are the building blocks of molecules, atomic habits are the building blocks of remarkable results.

-To be sure that habits prevail, you must develop a system (It is important to focus more on systems rather than goals- it’s an atomic habit system that will take you through to your goals).   

Three things you must consider about changing your habits:

     1. The Outcome (Your UFG)

     2. The Process (Steps or action plans)

     3. Identity (Core beliefs/values)


Identity

-For you to change what you do, you need to know who you want to be, what you stand for, your principles, and your beliefs.

-Habits are deeply rooted in your personality and that makes it difficult for them to change. So, if you want to alter your habits, you must change yourself bit by bit.

-Environment matters more than motivation.

-New environments are devoid of old reminders and cues and so they are better suited for developing new habits.

Make Your Habits Enjoyable and Attractive

-Reward yourself

-Do something you enjoy right before completing a difficult habit.

-Pair an action you want to do with an action you need to do.

-Join a group or community where your growth habits or encouraged and desired.


Make Your Habits Simple and Easy

We make things more difficult than they have to be. To get through this ABCs of Life Framework focus on walking in slowly before your run, but do not turn back.

-Planning is essential but the most important thing is practicing.

-The number of times an action is performed, is more important than the time you spend performing the habit.

-Focus us on repeating good and essential tasks because when behaviors are continuously repeated, they become habits.
